Well i gotta admit me Dad and Me gots a soft spot fer inline motors. Inline 6s inline 8s. Our favorite inlinners(cause we are chevy guys) is the chevy 235 and 261. Right now the count is 4 235 engines. one in my 58 chevy truck, one on a stand with a tranny mounted to it, one in the shed thats apart, and now another one.


The one pictured here is the newest(bought and picked up yesterday) for 200 bucks. The story on this one is that we went to a junk yard and there was this 56-57 1 1/2 maybe 2 ton chevy truck well a aviation fuel tanker. Thinking it was a 261 chevy in it i looked at it to find no motor. Well we bought the spedo which reads 15,000 miles. So we asked what happend to the motor and this guys said well the company that shreds wood down there still has the motor. They had the truck before us. So we there. Well we asked and they said well we want to keep the tranny but if ya want it 200 bucks its yours. So we told them we would be back next week to pick it up. So yesterday we did that. So today we unloaded the engine from the 58 and i decided not to do any model building and clean the pucker up.


4 hours later it was clean. Dad decided to see if the motor turns. Well we took out the spark plugs(makes it easier to turn) and found that the plugs looked great and somewhat unused. Next we already knew that there was a brand new started on there. Dad turned the motor and it was nice no grinding noises nothing.

Plans for this thing are to clean it some more, paint it, i will be painting the other valve cover(after dad fixes a cut in hole) and other side cover we had from out various 235s. Also i will see if i can get an old used model a cone muffler for a straight pipe and it will be getting an old mcgurk or thickstun dual carb with some modfied 57 chevy hood bullets for air cleaner covers ;D

Well just thought iwould share. This motor is likely goings into dads 36. The carb base that came with the motor suggests that the truck itslef had a power drum breaks. I will be goings back to the junkem yard and getting all useable parts from the that truck as maybe i can adapt the 36 breaks to the power booster. Also maybe be gettin extra door handels for the maybe the steering box and the pedals and maybe some other stuff ;D

Oh Wow! Flow! thanks fer sharing them pics! Man does that bring back memories! I remember I kept fiddling with my 235, it being my first and all, always doing something to it. Not much more than just cleaning it and getting to know about it, as I was also working in an 'old fashioned' gas station, where I pumped yer gas and checked yer oil, and washed yer windyshield! Anyhows, one day, a few hours before I was to leave for work, I figured I'd tighten up that brass fitting in the block that the oil line from the oil filter ran into...........Big mistake!, I snapped that brass fitting off, leaving the threads in the block. That's when I learned one of many lessons about cars, and when I found out about EZouts ;D

Them are good engines Flow. My parents bought me a 4door '57 Chevy with the 235 up there and 3 on the tree. I remember droppin' it down into 2cd gear one night while doin 80mph, picked up 5 more mph, and put it back in 3rd. Just seemed you could really beat them things. Wound up burning up the valves coz I kept tightening the rocker arms down to get rid of the tapping noises. Another one of my lessons

Thanks guys. ;D Kit i am a wild guy i actaully wanna build a 216 even though its not a full preasure and it has babbit bearings.

Anyway dad and me loooked through craigslist and found another 235 for 150 bucks complete with intake carb tranny all. So there may be another one joining the family ;D I am hoping to convince dad to let me build a double engined dragster lol.


Also today at the swap meet we bought another intake. We saw our friend who had it. The story on this one was that our friend was comming back from a show with a truck load of intakes which he sells and ran out of gas. Luckly HE made it possible for them to stop infront off of course a hot rodders house. The hot rodder filled up the gas tank and asked them if they would like to look at what he had. Our friend told us when he opened the garage there was a wonderful 54 chevy truck with a 235 in it. The guy said he is scrapping everything under the hood as he wants a v8. The 235 though was hooked up with a Nicson dual carb intake, wayne valvbe and side cover, and a split stock exhaust. So our friend bought all the motor parts he could.

Skip to today. I saw the intake with its linkage and dual carters. It was a nicson and i told dad and since we bought our triple carb nicson from him too we had make a deal. Our friend told us he didnt really want to split but he told us $350 with carbs and linkage, $250 for a bear intake. So we started thinking. We then asked if he would be interested in 3 core holley 94s and a carter. He said yes and we told him if he made the price $200 for the bear intake we would buy the intake and drive home and get the carbs.

30 mins later dad and me loaded the nicson dual carb in the trunk of the jeep. ;D Also browsed the swap and found one of the 2 carbs needed for it, another rochester for a wopping 5 bucks ;D Seems like HE helped us make some nice deals.

Our(well mine ;D ) plans included 2 rebuilt rochesters, a new linkage, clean up the intake, and 2 kustom air cleaners built out of 2 air cleaner bases and 2 57 chevy hood bullets ;D

Thanks fer sharing them pix Flow! Hope you enjoy rebuilding them Carters. After I blowed up my 235, my brother & I put a 283 in my '57. We didn't have a clue what we were doing, but God helped us along the way, even with a thunderstorm-- we didn't know about timing, and we couldn't get the 283 to run with the stock 2 barrel it had on it (mighta been a 265, but we wanted it to be a 283 ;D), so we went & got a 4barrel intake manny and a few Carters & Stromberg(?) carbs from my brother's friend's collection in his back yard. Started rebuilding 4barrels & tryin' them out on the V8, which also didn't even have the exhaust mannys on (no back pressure, which didn't help matters). Anyhows, we got it to kinda run, mostly wide open with the 4barrel, no exhaust, and this was in our driveway between the two neighbor's houses ;D ;D. All of a sudden a thunderstorm came blowing in, with big gusts of wind, which blew the pages on the Chilton manual we had sitting on the front fender. We kinda panicked thinkin we had lost our place in the book, but when we got there we saw "Timing"......and we're like, "Huh, wonder if this thing is in time?" ;D ;D ;D Got a light, some chalk, and got it in time, put the exhaust mannys on and it sounded GOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!! ;D HE

Way kool set up with the duals with the bullets! If'n I run across any '57 bullets, I knows where to send 'em Can't wait to see them sticking thru the hood of yer truck!

I tried to reply to your cool scores the other
night, but my stupid computer had other ideas.

The 235 in that condition is a find. But the
Nicson manifold is a treasure!

My copy is boxed up so I can't show any
pictures but a must have is the reprint of
"California Bill's Chevy / GMC Manual".
It is still in print. A lot of the later 235 info
is dated, but there is a lot of info on the care
and feeding of the earlier 216's.

Some years ago a friend gave me an NOS Edelbrock
2X1 intake for a 53 up Studebaker flattie 6. I just need
to find the car to build it around!
