I have had the good fortune of meeting a lot of good people through the model building hobby. It makes no difference what they build, most are willing to share advice and experiences. The back story to this build is one of those people. I have known Les for 15+ years, he was one of the first people to greet me when I attended my first SABA meeting back in '94/'95. He is always quick to extend a hand in friendship, I have never known him ever have a cross word to or about anyone.
Several years ago Les had an AMT '28 Ford Sedan for sale in the swap meet at our Model Car Fest. The price was reasonable considering the quality of the kit and the fact that it was the most complete one of these kits I had ever seen. At the time I couldn't see my way clear to buy the kit. A few years went by and I ask Les if he still had the kit, he indicated that he still had it. I ask if he was still looking to sell the kit and sadly he said he had decided to keep it but would keep me in mind if he ever changed his mind.
I have since bought a couple of other kits of the '28, neither in as good of condition or as complete. At our club meeting earlier this month Les told me to call him as he had a late Christmas present for me. Of, course with getting the Model Car Fest together etc, I forgot to call him as well. Saturday morning I was setting up the photo booth and camera for the event, in walks Les with a towel covering something in his hand. He removes the towel and hands me the AMT '28 Sedan and says, "I was going to give this to you at Christmas but I kept forgetting." I was stunned and asked if he was sure. He told me that his health was getting worse and he no longer had the motor skills to do right by the kit. Then he paid me one of the biggest complements ever when he told me that after seeing what I did with the '32 Sedan Delivery that I would do right by the Sedan.
So, to make a long story short, knowing that Les' health is waning and that I want to make sure that he sees the Sedan completed, I am going to jump on this build following the completion of the Shadowbox Coupe.
The plan is to use as much of the base kit as possible while upgrading those pieces that need to be brought into the 21st century. Halibrands will be used on all 4 corners. A flathead of later vintage w/speed parts from Model Car Garage and Replicas and Miniatures Company of Maryland will get used. Along with misc pieces from newer Revell Deuce kits.
Even in 1965 they pulled bodies out of the mold to soon and you get shrinkage around the door posts.
The drivers side bumper horn is the only piece on the kit that is broken. Fortunately, one of the other fender units has a usable one that will replace it.

Stay tuned, I would imagine that construction should commence in the next week to 10 days.
