On a annother small model forum I started a diorama tutorial for the administrator . Well everybody stopped posting for an unknown reason . I posted the pictures on the Big Kahunna forum an I figgured that you folks might want to see something out of the ordinary here . I do service stations. I only build buildings that were actually built too, not " Fantasy " buildings . This building was built here in Richmond Virginia in 1937. It sold Amoco gasoline until around 1959 when Interstate - 95 came through Downtown Richmond cutting most of the traffic off. Somehow , the building survives even today at the corner of 3rd Ave and Preston ave . Im showing the service station this comming year to depict the year 1948 . Ed Shaver

Hey Ed, nice to see the station hereabouts. Love that Willys, but what happened to the slicks & blown engine? ;D ;D You say the building is still standing-- anything being done with it? Or is it just slowly falling apart? What's yer next project? Later and God bless

Nicely Done Ed, structure modeling may use a lot of the techniques that we use for our everyday building but there are a lot of tricks that don't transition well from fiber board to plastic.
You've got to love the buildings of the first half of the 20th century, they still had form and character.
I managed a LHS in the late '70s, one of my weekend guys and I use to build structural models for court cases. We made good money at it but it became like a second job and stripped the fun out of it.

Thank you Mr Dave , thank ya ! I usuallly use Birch veener Plywood - 1/4in , and Foam Core board . I also use Bodyman in a can - Bondo a lot of it too ! John to answer your questions , whew ! The Amoco station was used as a neighbor hood store around 1967-70 or therebouts . Since then the building has been used to store junk , debris and neighborhood rats and several drug thugs . As to my next project , I want to do a Crown station from the early 1960's . Crown Central built this one on Nine Mile road near the 7- Pines Battle field in the mid Fifties . This will allow me to now display several builts that I have that were built to say 1966. I promise to keep everyone posted as to my progress in the commimg year . Thanks to Demonhunterfan I can take lottsa pichers too ! Ed Shaver

I'm in the process of doing a diorama myself. Thanks for the inspiration to get back in gear. Old service stations hold a special place in my heart since my first real job was at a Tenneco station. I loved it. Sure beat delivering newspapers

Tenneco............. uh does that put ya down in the south west ? I remember Tenneco but in Houston at least , all they had were a couple of self serve stations . I also remember reading where they sold their marketing operations to a large industrial conglomerate in about 1983 too . Ed Shaver

Ed, thanks for showing your service station here! Every time I look at it I see something new.
I wish you were still in the M-plex too, so as I could see your beauties in person! ;D

Don, I wish I were back in Dallas - Ft worth too ! despite the nusience ice storms, problems with R L Thornton Freeway and the super sprawl down on I - 20 I could at least get a set of points for my 53 Ford truck ! Hey, mebbie someday. I also remember going out to the west side of Ft Worth as I used to see the remnants of some very very early Texaco stations out on Camp Bowie Blvd ......... Ed Shaver

Along with the capricious every-day weather. Today it was in the mid-30's and rainy. Tomorrow it's supposed to be near 60 and sunny. Wednesday brings 40's and more rain.... there goes painting for ? long.... I need to get to the F/W side more often. There are some neat old stations around, but they are being razed pretty fast, only to be replaced with bare concrete. Progress, huh.

Don , if nothinelse go a Wals r Wal- worl and buy yerself a disposable digital camera. Always keep the camera with you in your car as it will help you in two ways . In the event of a collion , you record the accident on disc. Meanwhile , save any kool ole archecture on disc if you pass a neat piece . such is the case of perhaps some of the nice old buildings out on Loop 820. Ed Shaver
