Several year ago Boyd Coddington brought his '37 Lincoln Zephyr to the Portland Roadster Show. The car sat in the public area of the concourse where the Model Car Contest was held. Because of this I got to see the car several times a day. The bodywork was flawless, the cars was a work of art. The wheels on the other hand fit into the category of "What were you thinking?" To have this fantastic automobile sitting on wheels that looked like 1 offs of a mid '80s Corvette wheel was a mystery to me. I never did find out why those wheels, but my love of Lincoln Zephyr's grew from that first encounter.
Jump forward to the 2009 Portland Roadster Show and out on the floor was another example of automotive perfection. I got a look at it one morning while headed into the show but my hands were full so I didn't get any pics of it. Any other time I left the Model Contest I either forgot my camera or some emergency befell the contest. By the time Sunday evening rolled around I was ready to get out of Dodge and totally spaced the Zephyr until I got home.
Here comes the fun part. I figure with 10 or so builds that real deadlines attached to them why not gather the parts to build a Zephyr. So, I search through my garage and Surprisingly enough I don't have a single Lincoln body. So, I post a Wanted-'41 Lincoln and my brother in the Lord Kit Karson comes through for me and sends me the Lincoln bits and pieces that he has. We're still not even through yet. So I get to searching through '37-'41 Lincoln photos and discover that the trunk section from the Jairus Watson designed Black Force looks a lot like a Zephyr. I head back to the garage and find the only Black Force body I have and the trunk/rear window section is missing (Don't ask me what I used it for because I'm clueless). So, I post another "Wanted-Black Force" and who should respond? You guessed it Kit Karson. The package with the Black Force arrived in today's mail. So here we go off on yet another adventure.
Thank you so very much Wes for your contributions to this project. I have no doubt that God will bless you for your acts of kindness. I know I've been blessed by your friendship.
Here are the initial bodies that will be used to build a 3 Window Zephyr Coupe:
Hosted on Fotki
I'm not sure how much of the Black Force roof will be used on the Zephyr conversion beyond the trunk/back glass area. The rest of the roof will most likely end up being a combination '37 Ford roof and what ever else that will make it look like what I want it to look like.
I'm thinking the engine from the Phantom Vicky would look pretty good in the engine bay. Someplace around here I have a set of Pegasus 23" Halibrand wheels that should tuck up under Zephyr body. After all they have to look better then Boyd's knock-off Corvette wheels.
As for color, I picked up some Sally Hansen Lacquer Shine fingernail polish called Flair. To say that it's Purple would be an understatement.
To go along with the Zephyr Coupe build I'm gathering parts to build a Zephyr Sedan Delivery as well. The SD will be built with a more traditional feel where the coupe will get the modern billet treatment.
Stay tuned.
