As most of you know the Pacific NW NNL was last weekend. I was ask to do one of the clinics for the event. I chose to chop the Revell '40 Ford Coupe. My plan was to chop one body and get in Paint prior to the event. One that was cut up and in pieces so everyone could see what it looked when all the pieces were laid out. THe third body was to go through the entire chop and reassembly in less then 60 minutes. So, now here I am with 3 Revell '40 Ford Coupes that are chopped. The one that is already in paint (on the Left) will progress to be the taildragger it was suppose to be. The one that (right) was the parts & pieces body will end up being a newer Street Rod. The one that was the cut up (center) at the NNL will be built as a Blown Vintage Coupe following the rules for the BVFCC class for SCTA Bonneville or Dry Lakes. Hosted on FotkiHosted on FotkiHosted on FotkiAfter doing some research on rules from the SCTA (Southern California Timing Ass'n) I found that Altered Coupe has nothing to do with being chopped. If a pre-'48 body is used and it is chopped it becomes a Competition Coupe. The flats coupe will either be built as a Blown Vintage Gas or Fuel Competition Coupe or as a Vintage Fuel or Gas Comp Coupe. The engine selection can be any American made engine from a 4 Banger to a Inline flathead, to a V8 flathead with or without overhead valves. to last but not least overheard valve with or without overheard valves. Stay tuned.

Just a quick update on the progress on the '40s. The major body work has been completed. The '40 for the BVFCC Salt flat version's roof line was leveled out using a couple of different 2 part A/B putty. The putty used for the center section was the Fix-it-stick at the top of the photo. I picked this up at Lowe's over the weekend. I had never used it before but, figured it was 2 part putty so it should work. This stuff was so HOT in less then 5 minutes I couldn't even touch it. It set up extremely fast. the remainder of the roof fill work was done using Milliput Superfine White putty. The '40 that is going to be the Street Rod version' s roof was done using TopFlite's Lightweight Microballons Filler. I've used Microballons in the past with varying results. When I have used them before I've used them and CA type glue as that was how I was instructed to use them. Because of the less then stellar results I haven't gone back to them. For some reason I decided to give them another shot. This time "I" read the instructions and mixed them with 2 part epoxy and guess what they actually work. Sanding and filing are easier then the 2 part putty and it set-up in about 30 minutes. I'm most likely going to use some variation of Raul Perez's idea from the MCM forum and incorporate the Revell '40 Willys Street Rod for the running gear for this build. Last but not least is the taildragger version. As this was the one that was thrown together quickly for the NNL the Evergreen and Tamiya Extra Thin Cement never had a chance to fully cure. The roof has now been sanded out and the dip in the roof where the filler piece is now level. Weather permitting I should be able to get this one back in paint later in the week. Hosted on FotkiBoth the taildragger and Street Rod versions will get the drip rails reinstalled using .015X.020 Evergreen prior to heading to paint.

just a question dave. You said the micro balls would be easier to use than to part filler and that the mirco balls take 30 mins to set up? If i may ask what kind of putty did you use before. I myselve use something new(works great and its cheap) and its called dolphin glaze. ITs a 2 part putty and its real easy to mix, its easy to sand(easier then the evercoat putty) and well the price is 11 bucks for a huge pouch of it.
This is just a question for ya as i am was wondering.
As for the coupes they are looking mighty fine. I really like the kolor on one of them(the burnt orange one). Looking good dave keep up the good work

Flo, the 2 part putty that I've used for years when more fillers is required then a glazing putty was put out by Hexell, either they have gone out of business or the LHS where I shop no longer orders it. Instead they now carry Milliput. It works well but requires around 24 hours to cure to the point where you can sand, drill, tap etc.
The Microballons are mixed with any standard 2 part epoxy. I normally use Permatex PermaPoxy 5 minute General Purpose Epoxy. The addition of the Microballons slows the curing time of the epoxy. The advantage of using the Microballons and epoxy is once it has cured there is minimal shrinkage. Notice I didn't say there is no shrinkage. Even 2 part glazing putty like Evercoat will have some shrinkage. And besides your mom won't run you out for mixing it in the house as all there is is the smell of the epoxy. Unlike Evercoat or other glazing putties.

ok dave thanks for clearing that up. I was just wondering on that but you cleared it up. I have used evercoat for couple years but now this new glazing putty is much better cheaper and there is less waste. Plus it doesnt smell as bad(it still smells). I am glad i work in the garage as my mom would kill me with all the dust and fumes from various things. Thanks again

Dave:
I like the way that taildragger coupe is turning out. I have a set of fender skirts from the AMT '40s and would eventually like to do them up on both the Sedan and Coupe. What color is that on the dragger?? Me likes it lots.

You know Dave I haven't worked on any of these for months now. I need to put them back into the rotation to get them clear off the bench and make room for other builds. Problem is I keep running into other things I'd rather work on more then a trio of '40 Coupes.

Dave the color on the taildragger is Dupli-color Metal Specks Burnt Copper. It goes on pretty easy, does require a clear coat as it tends to be rough due to the metal flake in the paint. The other thing I can tell you about it is that it's not cheap IIRC it was somewhere in the area of $11 for a standard rattle can.

Oh well, maybe I can come up with a low cost alternative, LOLOLOLOL. Gotta keep them $$$ saved, its getting to that time of year again and I got 2 Granddaughters that are just too young to give just plain gifts to. We'll see though.

Fletch:
Have you done any more work on your 40 chopped Ford. I really like how that bronze colored car was going and I hadn't checked in a while.

Fletch: Have you done any more work on your 40 chopped Ford. I really like how that bronze colored car was going and I hadn't checked in a while. Dave Funny you should ask Dave, I have another '40 that I'm chopping for a member from the TRaK forum. The '40s that I had chopped last year haven't been touched in a while. But, as I work on this other '40 the one that was in paint and the one that is ultra chopped are getting worked on a bit as well. The Shadowbox Coupe and the '48 Woody are top priorities at the moment. Once they are completed the '40s will be back on the bench getting completed. In Christ
