Just finished this STuTZ yesterday-- a very enjoyable build-- first one in a long time that I stuck with, and got done in about 6 weeks.
I just love the looks of these old time racers. Probably what got me into the model building as a young'un.
Really like the bigger 1/16 scale, and IMHO, this is a great kit-- for beginners, as well as experienced builders-- lots of scratchbuilding opportunities on it. The belts would be a lot easier to paint if they were seperate, but.....
This is the kit decal for the STuTZ badge on the rad housing. I was going to try and paint the embossed badge, but glad I tried this decal
I added a little bit of detail-- from researching, another aspect of the model building I enjoy-- seeing some of the old timers wrapped their steering wheels with cloth and/or tape, and I added some pads to the pedals.
Love the look of this old engine, but Mr Lindberg didn't even include a fan for it! I, at least, added some fiberglass screening to the back of the rad shell...... ;D. The larger size would really make plumbing this cool old engine out a lot of fun, and I may just do that with a future build.
All in all, a very enjoyable build. Pretty good fit of all parts. I built it pretty much out of box, but I did add and change things a bit:
1) I wrapped the seats, and lowered the mechanic's seat
2) Opened up the end of the exhaust pipe...... duh....
3) Made valve stems from stretched sprue
4) Added 'rubber' pads to the pedals
5) Made 'nuts' to bolt the engine to the frame
6) Wrapped steering wheel with thin strips of masking tape
7) Modified the grease caps on the axle ends-- put a hex head on them
8) Used #5 decals from '36 Chevy modified "Flimsy 5", and cut a stencil from masking tape to dry brush the #5 on the grille.
9) Splattered it liberally with 'MUD'
Lots of WIP pics- 11 pages!- here: public.fotki.com/V866/model-cars--trucks/racer-types/lindberg-116-stutz-/
Thanks for looking, and may God bless
